Living At Shalem

What types of living arrangements are available?

We offer a variety of living arrangements, including supportive living, independent living and affordable subsidized housing.

Can I tour the facility and see different unit options?

Yes, we encourage tours and can schedule a visit at your convenience to show you around and answer any questions in person.

What is the process for moving in?

Once your application is approved, we will work with you to schedule a move-in date and provide assistance with the transition.

Are pets allowed?

Yes, at this time we allow residents to have cats in their suites. Please see Management for the complete Pet Policy.

Can I bring my own furniture and personal belongings?

Yes, we do not have furnished suites in any of our suites.

Costs and Fees

What are the costs associated with living at Shalem?

Costs vary depending on the type of unit and level of care needed. We provide a detailed breakdown of all fees during the interview process.

What is included in the monthly fee?

The monthly fee covers rent, heat, water, building and grounds maintenance, common
space insurance, and access to all amenities and activities. In our studio suites, weekly housekeeping and all meals are also included in the monthly fee.

Are there any additional fees or charges that I should be aware of?

While the monthly fee covers most services, some additional services, such as personal care or special outings may incur extra charges.

Residents in the one- and two-bedroom suites are responsible for their own electricity and cable TV. All residents are responsible for their phones and internet.

Are there any upfront fees or deposits?

Yes, there is an initial entry fee or damage deposit which varies depending on the type of unit and level of care provided.

Health Care and Safety

What health services are provided on-site?

We have an on-site Nurse and Health Care Aides that service the residents in all buildings (Please refer to the Health Support Program for more information on medical services).

Are there fitness and wellness programs available?

Yes, we offer a range of wellness programs including daily fitness classes, health and wellness clinics, yoga, walking groups and a fitness room with age-appropriate gym equipment.

Meals and Dietary needs

What dining options are available?

Our Dining Room prepares three nutritious meals a day which are included in the monthly rent of a studio suite. Residents in the one- and two-bedroom suites can access meals in the Dining Room as desired for an additional cost.

Are special dietary needs accommodated?

Yes, we can accommodate special dietary requirements, including diabetic, low-sodium, vegetarian and gluten-free diets.

Can residents cook in their own suites?

Our independent living units are equipped with full kitchens and the supportive living units have
kitchenettes.

Activities

Are there programs or events for families to participate in?

Yes, we host regular family events and encourage family involvement in our community activities.

What types of events and activities are offered?

We offer a variety of activities including arts and crafts, music, hymn singing, socials, happy hour, monthly resident birthday parties, cards and games, bingo, bible study group, chapel, brain teasers and more.

Safety

Is there a community center or common area for socializing?

Yes, we have several common areas including a games room, Café, social rooms, atrium and special reading or visiting nooks. We have a vibrant community life designed to encourage social interaction  and build friendships.

What security measures are in place?

The buildings are equipped with 24/7 security and emergency call systems.

How are emergencies handled?

We have an emergency response plan and trained staff on-site to handle any emergencies. Shalem provides residents with a wearable device that enables them to call for immediate assistance in case of a medical emergency or safety concern. These pendants are included in the rent package for the studio only and are available for other residents for a monthly fee.

Visitors

What are the visiting hours?

Family and friends are invited to visit residents regularly, including children of all ages and pets. Shalem has no set times for visiting hours and visitors are welcome anytime, but we ask that children and pets be supervised appropriately.

Are there accommodations available for visitors?

Yes, we have two guest suites that can be reserved for visiting family and friends.
